Fully equipped Trede Hospital left to rot while KATH struggles under pressure – Dr. Kingsley Agyemang

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and a Member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has called on President John Mahama to immediately operationalise the Trede Agenda 111 Hospital, describing it as a fully equipped health facility that is being left idle while the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) struggles under increasing pressure.
The appeal follows recent concerns over congestion at KATH, which was compelled to temporarily halt new admissions at its Accident and Emergency Centre after the facility exceeded its capacity.
As part of an inspection tour of abandoned and unoperationalised health facilities in the Ashanti Region by the Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Agyemang visited the Trede Hospital and expressed disappointment over its continued closure despite being completed and commissioned.
“It’s so disheartening. This is the completed Trede Agenda 111 hospital facility with staff quarters. Two-bedroom apartments and suites are ready. There are TV screens and every fitting that needs to be fixed is ready, but the hospital is not opened,” he said.
According to the Abuakwa South legislator, the facility already possesses the infrastructure and equipment needed to provide healthcare services, with the only missing component being personnel.
“All that the hospital needs is human beings to come and work there. Mr. President, we dey beg you. Just bring the nurses and doctors to come and work here for us,” he appealed.
Dr. Agyemang noted that the hospital was commissioned in December 2024 and remains in a condition suitable for immediate use.
“Everything is ready and it was commissioned in December 2024. These flat screens, all the air conditioners and ceiling fans are working. There is light and everything is being left to go waste,” he lamented.
He argued that operationalising the facility would help ease the burden on major referral hospitals in the Ashanti Region, particularly KATH, which continues to face increasing patient numbers.
“It’s a 100-bed hospital, including Accident and Emergency. Government, we beg you, come and operationalise the facility,” he stated.
Dr. Agyemang further maintained that the continued closure of completed healthcare facilities undermines efforts to improve healthcare delivery and expand access to quality medical services.
He urged government to prioritize the recruitment and deployment of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to the facility so that it can begin serving residents of Trede and surrounding communities.
The Minority Caucus has indicated that its inspection exercise is aimed at drawing attention to completed but non-operational health projects and pushing for their immediate activation to help address growing pressure on existing healthcare facilities.
