Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the restoration of the Teacher Trainee Allowance in Accra.
The Vice President said the role of Education in every economy cannot be downplayed. It is in this regard that government will continue to implement policies that will make the teaching profession attractive.
The restoration of the Teacher Trainees allowance was one of the campaign promises of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016.
The allowance was cancelled by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2013/2014 academic year arguing that the budget was overburdened and prevented the admission of more trainees due to the quota system.
Since September 2017, the teacher trainees have been receiving GH¢400 each as their allowance.
Vice President Bawumia said the restoration indicates the priority government is giving to education. The development infrastructure is also receiving the needed attention.
Vice President Bawumiah said government will role out other incentives for teachers to attract more people into the profession.
The President of the Teacher Trainee Association of Ghana, Jonathan Apam while applauding government for restoring the allowance, appealed for it be increased.
The programme was attended by Principals of the 46 Colleges of Education in the country and students.
