Kumasi International Airport set for full operations by end of June
The Kumasi International Airport is on track to commence full operations by the end of June this year, following an official handover to the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The airport’s commissioning, scheduled for May ending, will facilitate testing essential for both domestic and international flights.
With an estimated capacity to accommodate over 800,000 passengers annually from the northern and middle belt regions, the facility represents a significant leap forward in regional connectivity.
Plans are underway to expand the runway and dismantle outdated infrastructure upon the terminal’s activation.
Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah on Tuesday (23 April) toured the site alongside Ghana Airport Company Limited’s management and Board Members, expressing satisfaction with progress while highlighting long-term maintenance concerns.
“My concern is not only about the edifice, [it is about] how we are going to put it to use and the maintenance level and how this thing will be functional so that our people will benefit from it. For me, that is where my concern is…We are planning to commission this facility before the end of May. We think that all things being equal we will be able to commission the facility.”
“But the fact that we commission doesn’t mean we will start operation. Because even if you commission it, you need to do more testing system and per the Ghana Airports, we are looking at by the end of June we should operationalise…All things being equal that is our timeline,” he stated.
The modern airport which meets International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards is expected to be named after the 13th Asante King, Nana Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh I.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II underscored the airport’s pivotal role in national socioeconomic growth during discussions with the Transport Minister and airport management.
He urged expedited efforts towards operationalizing the Kumasi International Airport, alongside resolving impediments hindering progress on the Boankra Inland Port project, essential for broader economic development.
