Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly sensitizes commercial tricycle operators
The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti region has held a sensitization program for commercial tricycle operators in the municipality to educate them on road safety regulations.
The program was which was aimed at reducing road accidents in the area, was attended by officials from the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, transport operators, assembly members and drivers.
Addressing the participants, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Alhaji Alidu Seidu, recognized the role the operations of the commercial tricycle, known as ‘Adedeta’ or ‘Pragia,’ have played in reducing unemployment in municipality, but urged them to be law abiding, adhering to road regulations and following instructions from the police.
He said the operations have also reduced crime rate in the municipality, because some of the youth, who, hitherto, were involved in criminalities, are now engaged in the business.
“I can confidently say that these activities of the tricycle operators reduced crime rate in the municipality because a lot of the unemployed have now engaged themselves as drivers, but please I beg you, do not get yourselves into trouble, just follow simple instructions from the police and obey road regulations,” he added.
He hinted that, for the purpose of easily identification, the assembly will issue stickers to every commercial tricycle, and urged them to comply.
Manhyia Police Divisional Commander Chief Supt. Kwaku Buah, who graced the occasion, advised them to stay out of trouble and not to allow themselves to be used by people indulge in acts that are against the law by picking the right number of passengers.
Some of the operators of ‘pragia’, speaking to Otec news’ reporter Isaac Nsiah Foster, expressed their joy about the program and how it had enlightened them in traffic regulations.
