Elephant kills NPP man at Garu-Tempane

A stray elephant allegedly attacked and killed one person, Issifu Kangari, in the early hours of Friday at Aloko community in the Kugri Electoral Area in the Garu-Tempane District of the Upper East Region.

An eyewitness who spoke to DAILY GUIDE after the incident, said people’s fear had however, been allayed following the killing of the hostile elephant by the security team, though people had not stopped wondering why the elephant killed Issifu Kangari, a New Patriotic Party Zonal Coordinator.

To some of the residents, the attack on Mr Kangari was just an accident, while others had read other meanings into it, alluding to political and spiritual workings.

The deceased was reportedly taking snapshots of the elephant (an animal he seemed to admire so much) when it purportedly attacked him, stamping him on the ground with its hefty legs.

The elephant that killed the NPP Zonal Coordinator was among a group of eight wild ones that had strayed into the Aloko community on Friday at about 7:30am. An eyewitness said seven of the elephants had run into a bush near the community, leaving the one that killed the deceased.

According to the eyewitness, a team of police personnel and soldiers, drawn from Bawku and Garu, were invited to drive it out of the community, and in the course of driving it away, the animal was killed. It was believed that the elephants had come from Togo through Nakpanduri in the Northern Region to the Garu-Tempane District in the Upper East Region.

They might have come to the Garu-Tempane district to take advantage of the greener vegetation there following recent downpours in the region.

The deceased has since been buried in line with Islamic tradition.
