NDC picks Presidential candidate on January 19

Barring any last minute changes, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will go to the polls on Saturday, January 19, 2019, to select a candidate to lead them into the 2020 elections.

For the first time in the history of the largest opposition party, executives of the party at the branch, constituency, regional levels as well as national executives, will take place in the process to decide their flagbearer.

Myjoyonline is learning National Executive Council (NEC) of the concluded at their meeting Wednesday that nomination forms should sell at GH¢20,000 while candidates will have to pay GH¢400,000 as the filing fee.

However, female candidates will pay 50% less of the filing fee while there will be an additional reduction for aspirants with physical disabilities.

The party is expected to hold a news conference on Thursday, November 29, where further information about the process is expected to be put out.

The election originally scheduled for December 7, 2018, was put on hold to allow the newly elected national officers some time to plan for the presidential primaries.

The NDC a couple of weeks ago went to Congress and elected new national officers led by Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, to steer its affairs for the next four years.

The Congress, which started on Saturday, November 17, ended in the wee hours of Monday, making it the most enduring it has organised in history.

Over 9,000 delegates participated in that election but this number is expected to shoot up significantly for the presidential primaries which has been opened to all executives in the party right from the branch, constituency, regional and national levels.

A source has told Myjoyonline that apart from the executives, former appointees who served in government while the NDC was in power and founding members of the party, will also be taking part in the primaries.

Mahama conspiracy

Some 12 aspirants including former president John Mahama and several of his appointees, have expressed their intent to contest the presidential primaries.

Meanwhile, Pollster and Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson has advised the many flagbearer aspirants seeking to lead the NDC in the 2020 elections, to merge against former president John Mahama.

This, in his view, is the only way they can minimise the margin of what he describes as an obvious win for Mr Mahama.

“I think if they consolidate, like four or five come together and say ‘we are backing one person against Mahama’ it will be an interesting race.
