The National House of Chiefs has condemned the violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on 31 January, 2019.

President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, while expressing worry over the violence described it as “unprecedented in the history of this country”.

He said ‘Nananom’ has decided to issue a statement to the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry tasked to probe the matter, to contribute in finding solutions to avoid a repetition of violence in subsequent polls.

Addressing a general meeting of the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi on Wednesday, 27 February 2019, the Agbogbomefia of The Asogli State, said if one by-election could result in such violence, then the 2020 general elections will be dangerous if same is repeated.

He said ‘Nananom’ is very much concerned about the peace of the country.

He indicated that Africa is poor because of lack of peace and togetherness though the continent is blessed with so much resources.

Togbe Afede further called for fairness in the conduct of elections to prevent occurrence of election violence since cheating is the main cause of chaos.

He entreated political parties to put the nation first in everything they do especially during elections to ensure that the nation’s peace is preserved.
