Woman throws 5-year-old son into well in Somanya

A 23-year-old mother, Rita Dede, has been arrested for drowning her own son, Tettey Joseph, 5, in a neglected well at Ogome, a suburb of the Somanya in Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

On Sunday, 8 April 2019, Rita caused the Ogome Information Centre to announce to the general public that her son was missing and sought assistance in searching for the boy.

A situation report by the Somanya District Police Command also said the suspect lodged a complaint of her missing son at the polcie station on Tuesday, 9 April 2019 and was given an extract to take to any radio station for a public announcement to be made about it.

On Wednesday, 10 April, however, one George Teye Wayo, a Youth Employment Coordinator at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly and a prophet, Mr Benjamin Teye Lawer, arrested the suspect and took her to the police station with a report that she had confessed to them that she drowned her son on Tuesday, 8 April.

The police drove to the area and found the little boy’s body in floating in prone position. They retrieved it and deposited the remains at the Aria Government Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The suspect is being held by the police for questioning.
