2024 manifesto: We’ll protect Free SHS and TVET programmes – Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to safeguard and enhance the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs if elected president.

Addressing supporters at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday (18 August), Dr Bawumia emphasized the importance of these educational initiatives for the nation’s development and the future of Ghana’s youth.

He highlighted his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education, regardless of financial background. Bawumia noted that the Free SHS and TVET programs are foundational to the country’s educational sector, and his administration would continue to invest in and improve these initiatives.

“Our government will protect and enhance the Free SHS/TVET programs, which are transforming lives and improving outcomes for millions,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “Since the introduction of Free SHS/TVET, enrolment has increased by 83%. We are building the foundation for a well-educated and prosperous society.”

Bawumia also outlined plans to boost funding, improve infrastructure, and introduce new curricula to meet modern job market demands. Additionally, he announced intentions to expand access to TVET programs and recruit more teachers with improved conditions of service.

He emphasised the programmes’ positive impact, noting that they have achieved gender parity, with more girls now accessing secondary education. This progress, he argued, will have long-lasting benefits for society as a whole.
