Legon Cities Captain Frank Akoto Issues Heartfelt Apology Following Relegation

Legon Cities captain Frank Akoto has issued a heartfelt apology to fans and the entire club following their relegation from the Ghana Premier League.

The Royals’ drop to the second tier was confirmed on Sunday after a painful 1-4 home defeat to league leaders Nations FC at the El-Wak Stadium. With just three games left in the season, Legon Cities sit 17th in the 18-team league, having managed only 25 points from a possible 93.

In what has been a difficult campaign for the club, Akoto has stood out as a shining light. The experienced center-back has delivered a brilliant individual season—leading from the back, scoring crucial goals, and showing unwavering commitment.

He missed just one match all season due to suspension and played every remaining minute under two different coaches, Paa Kwesi Fabin and Yaw Acheampong, the latter of whom recently departed the club.

The 27-year-old, who joined Legon Cities from AshantiGold SC, has been a central figure in the club’s journey in the top flight over the past two years. Known for his defensive resilience, leadership, and ability to contribute offensively, Akoto has grown into one of the most respected figures in the squad.

In an emotional Facebook post, Akoto wrote:

“To everyone at Legon Cities, I want to start by saying how deeply sorry I am that we were not able to avoid relegation this season. I know how much this club means to each and every one of you and I’m deeply disappointed that we weren’t able to give the success you deserve… Your energy, passion, money and loyalty has been keeping us going even in the toughest moments.”

He added that despite the disappointment, the team would fight to finish the remaining fixtures with pride and determination.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Akoto is expected to seek a new challenge elsewhere. His quality and consistency have not gone unnoticed, and several top-tier clubs are likely to express interest in securing his services. Wherever he ends up next, his professionalism and leadership will be remembered fondly by the Royals’ faithful.

Legon Cities now turn their focus to rebuilding in Division One, and while the loss of a player like Akoto will be felt, his legacy at the club as a true leader remains unquestioned.
