Ashanti Regional minister urges calm at Manso Tontokrom amid tensions with Asanko Mines

The Ashanti Regional minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has called on the chiefs and youth of Manso Tontokrom to remain calm as his office works to address their concerns over alleged military brutality and mining-related tensions involving Asanko Mines.

In response to a viral video circulating with claims that he had promised to withdraw military personnel protecting Asanko Mines, Dr. Amoakohene clarified that he gave no such assurance.

“Nowhere did I say I would cause the withdrawal of military persons protecting the concessions of Asanko Mines,” he told the media.

Clarification of petition

Dr. Amoakohene acknowledged that the chiefs and youth recently petitioned him about the operations of Asanko Mines, especially concerning reported brutalities by military officers on local small-scale miners.

He said his office is working to find a peaceful resolution through dialogue with all relevant stakeholders.

“The issues can be solved collectively. I have assured the Chiefs and youth that I will work on their petition to find a fair and peaceful solution,” he added.

He emphasised his commitment to justice and stability in the Amansie enclave.

Background to the dispute

The dispute between the Tontokrom community and Asanko Mines has been ongoing, with reports of violence and fatalities in the past.

In 2024, a clash between residents and private security personnel deployed to safeguard Asanko Gold Mines Limited’s concession left three individuals dead.

The community has been protesting against the company’s alleged use of military personnel to harass and intimidate them.

Asanko Mines’ response

Asanko Gold has responded to the community concerns, stating that the military presence in Tontokrom is part of a state-mandated security intervention aimed at protecting legitimate mining operations from the threat of illegal mining.

The company emphasized that the deployment is not intended to intimidate or harass community members but to ensure safety and compliance with mining regulations.

Upon receipt of the petition, the Minister invited the chiefs and the youth to a meeting and promised to facilitate solution to the issues raised.
