Encroachers threaten Lake Bosomtwe as Ashanti Regional Minister halts clearing activities

Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana’s largest natural lake and a major tourist attraction, is under serious threat from unknown encroachers.

The unidentified individuals have cleared large portions of vegetation along the lake’s banks. The clearing has exposed the area to direct sunlight and put the ecological integrity of the natural reserve at risk.

Excavation activities are ongoing at the site. More vegetation is being removed, raising concerns about the long term sustainability of the lake and its surrounding bio-conservation zone.

On Wednesday, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, ordered the immediate cessation of all land clearing activities around Lake Bosomtwe. He tasked the Environmental Protection Authority to probe the incident and lead efforts to restore the affected areas.

The EPA has commenced investigations into the destruction along the banks of the lake by unknown persons. Officials say protecting the critical conservation zone is a priority.

Nana Kwaku Bio, the Abasɛ Dikro, said that following the EPA’s directive, he will ensure the excavator does not work on the river banks. He pledged to support efforts to safeguard the lake.

Meanwhile, some residents have expressed worry over how Lake Bosomtwe is being treated. They are calling for urgent action to stop further damage and restore the cleared areas.
