Two units restored at Akosombo Substation after fire disruption – Energy Minister

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced the restoration of two generation units at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation following a recent fire that disrupted electricity supply across parts of the country.

The incident caused extensive damage to the facility’s control systems, affecting power transmission from the Akosombo enclave and triggering outages in several areas.

Providing an update on Monday, 27 April, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, said emergency technical work had enabled engineers to bring two units back into operation.

“Through emergency measures, the first-generation unit was restored yesterday, and I received confirmation that the second unit is now generating power. Work is still ongoing on the third unit, and we are working tirelessly to bring it back online as soon as possible,” he said during the Government Accountability Series.

The Minister indicated that work is ongoing to restore additional units, with engineers deployed on-site to accelerate repairs and stabilise the system.

He assured the public that efforts are being intensified to restore full capacity and improve power delivery in the coming days.

“We are committed to restoring full power supply as quickly as possible. The teams are working around the clock, and we expect more units to come back online shortly, which will enhance the stability of the national grid and improve power delivery,” Jinapor added.

The partial restoration is expected to ease pressure on the national grid as repair works continue on the remaining units.
