Rail services from Tema to Accra suspended while gov’t sets up committee to look into train derailment

Government has set up a three member committee to investigate the cause of the train derailment at the Achimota Railway Station Monday.

The Committee has, up to ten days to present its report.

Speaking on Radio Ghana’s Current Affairs Program, “Behind the News”, the Minister for Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, said for now railway services from Tema to Accra have been suspended for the next ten days until the committee presents its report on what actually happened on that fateful morning.

Three people have been discharged from the Achimota hospital with one admitted after a train moving from Tema to Accra derailed some few meters after the Achimota Railway station.

Some eye witnesses around told GBC’s correspondent that the incident occurred around 7:30 when the last coach got off the tracks.

The train, which is made up of six coaches had its last derailed coach blocked from falling over by a heap of sand.

Deputy Minister of Railways Development Kwaku Agyenim Boateng appealed for public confidence in the Ministry saying his outfit will not play any blame games in handling the situation.

He assured the victims of government’s support.

The police were also on site to provide security at the scene.
