Child labour remains high in Ghana – Nana Addo

The president of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, has expressed his regret at how children are used to undertake activities that affect their health, education and development negatively.

The president has therefore assured that his government will ensured that children do not work under hazardous conditions to support themselves and their families.

Nana Akufo Addo said in his speech at the May Day celebration in Kumasi on Tuesday May, 1, 2018, a day set aside to recongnised workers around the world for their contributions in the various aspect of the economy.

The day was celebrated under theme “Sustainable Development Goals and Decent Work: The Role of Social Partners.

He said all these are mainly because of lack of awareness about indifference to rights of children, and it is high time children are proected from being used by persons for their selfish interests, or for the children themselves.

“Our children should be treated as children, and do what children do, they must be in school, learning to be production citizens of tomorrow. While attending school, children must only perform child work which prepare them for their future,” the president added.

“The daily spectacle of children weaving through traffic on our roads and hawking all manner of things when they should be schools must be of great concern, and the government is working with all partners towards the goal of eliminating child labour,” he assured.
