NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made a bold statement of party unity, appointing all four of his former rivals in the January 2026 presidential primary as co-chairmen of the party’s newly established Policy Committees .Remove ads
A move analysts say is a sign that the elephant family is closing ranks and marching in one direction ahead of the next election.
The appointments form part of a structured, data-driven Policy Committee framework that Dr Bawumia is establishing within the party, designed to generate credible, evidence-based alternative policy recommendations across critical sectors of Ghana’s economy and governance.

According to the flagbearer’s office, the framework is intended to position the NPP not merely as an opposition party, but as a government-in-waiting with serious, workable solutions for Ghanaians. Dr Bawumia wants a party that doesn’t just criticise, he wants a party that can present Ghanaians with a clear, costed, and credible alternative at any point in time.
The Structure
At the apex of the new framework sits the NPP Policy Committee, chaired by legislator and former Minister of Works and Housing and Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah. Dr Kwasi Nyame Baafi, a technocrat, has been named Secretary to the Committee, a role expected to lend significant intellectual and administrative rigour to its operations.
The Committee will oversee a broad range of sector-specific sub-committees spanning employment and jobs, energy, decentralisation and local governance, roads and transport, land and natural resources, education, health, the economy, and several other critical policy areas.
Each sub-committee is tasked with conducting independent research, engaging sector experts and stakeholders, and producing policy alternatives backed by verifiable data, all subject to the review and ultimate approval of the flagbearer.Remove ads
The Four Former Rivals
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the outspoken businessman and former Member of Parliament, has been appointed Co-Chairman of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee — a portfolio that aligns with his long-standing advocacy for private sector-led job creation and entrepreneurship.
Kwabena Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary, takes the co-chairmanship of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, a sector whose deficits remain a pressing concern for Ghanaians in both urban and rural communities.
Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Agriculture and Interior, assumes the co-chairmanship of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, a natural fit for a man who brings firsthand ministerial experience in security and governance.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Education, completes the quartet as Co-Chairman of the Education Policy Committee, bringing with him a track record of policy innovation and a deep commitment to transforming Ghana’s educational landscape.
The appointments are being read as more than a structural exercise. By placing his four former rivals at the heart of the party’s policy architecture, Dr Bawumia is sending a clear message: the NPP’s internal competition is over, and the focus has shifted entirely to preparing for government.
The flagbearer’s office indicated that Dr Bawumia was determined to move the NPP away from reactive opposition politics towards proactive, solution-oriented governance preparation and the composition of the new Policy Committee framework suggests that project is now firmly underway.
