Professor Christian Agyare Appointed Next KNUST Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has officially appointed Professor Christian Agyare, Provost of the College of Health Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology(KNUST), as the university’s next Vice-Chancellor. The decision was finalized during a Council meeting held early this morning.

Professor Agyare is set to succeed the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure concludes on July 31, 2026.

Background:

The selection of a Vice-Chancellor at KNUST—Ghana’s premier science and technology institution—is a rigorous process governed by the university’s statutes.

Historically, the search begins months in advance through the formation of a Search Committee.

The Candidate:

Professor Christian Agyare is a distinguished scholar, previously serving as the Provost of the College of Health Sciences.

His appointment suggests a continued institutional focus on health sciences and research excellence.

The Transition:

He takes the helm at a time when the university is expanding its digital infrastructure and global research footprint.

 Selection Process

While the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor is a standard administrative milestone, it is rarely without complexity. Several key issues typically surround this transition:

1. The “Extension” Controversy

The transition follows a period of significant debate regarding the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson.

Earlier in 2024 and 2025, discussions surfaced regarding a potential two-year extension of her term.

While the Governing Council eventually approved an extension, it met with legal challenges and petitions from certain university unions and alumni groups who argued for a strict adherence to retirement age protocols and the need for fresh leadership.

2. Leadership:

Prof. Dickson made history as the first female Vice-Chancellor of KNUST. Her departure marks the end of a landmark era for gender representation in Ghanaian higher education leadership.

The selection of Prof. Agyare shifts the mantle back to a male successor, prompting discussions within the academic community about maintaining diversity in top-tier administrative roles.

3. Labor Relations and Campus Climate

The incoming Vice-Chancellor inherits a complex relationship with various campus unions, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU).

Issues such as book and research allowances, market premium adjustments, and campus security remain perennial challenges that the new administration must navigate to ensure academic stability.

4. Balancing Tradition with Innovation

A recurring critique of the selection process is whether it prioritizes internal seniority over external innovation.

The Council often faces pressure to choose a candidate who understands the “KNUST culture” while also possessing the global outlook necessary to climb international university rankings.

Looking Ahead:

Professor Agyare will assume office on August 1, 2026. His leadership will be defined by how he addresses the funding gap in higher education and how he manages the increasing student population while maintaining the university’s rigorous academic standards.
