CPP urges government to deploy Navy, Air Force and Blue Water Guards to rescue flood victims

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called on the government to immediately deploy the Ghana Navy, the Air Force and the Blue Water Guards to rescue residents trapped by the devastating floods that followed Monday’s heavy rainfall in Accra.

In a statement issued on June 29, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP described the flooding as a preventable tragedy, blaming it on years of poor urban planning, illegal construction on waterways and the failure of authorities to enforce sanitation laws.

According to the party, the disaster was “self-inflicted” and could have been avoided if decisive action had been taken against indiscriminate building on waterways and the dumping of refuse into drainage systems.

“This disaster is self-inflicted because it was avoidable and preventable. The indiscriminate building on waterways and water bodies has been a looming disaster for a long time, yet we continue to sweep it under the carpet like many of our national problems,” the statement said.

The CPP further lamented that while rainfall should ordinarily benefit Ghana’s agricultural sector, it has instead resulted in loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.

“What ought to have been a blessing, particularly to our agricultural sector, has become a curse, claiming lives and destroying properties worth millions of cedis,” the party stated.

Expressing concern that the rains were expected to continue, the CPP urged the government to treat the situation as a national emergency by mobilising all available resources for rescue operations.

“We call on the government to immediately deploy the Ghana Navy, every available speedboat, the Air Force and the Blue Water Guards to rescue, save and protect lives and properties. The Government of Ghana owes it to the people to act swiftly in this emergency,” Mr. Acquah said.

The party also appealed to the Minister for Energy to order an immediate power shutdown in flood-affected communities where rising water levels have reached electricity poles and other sensitive electrical installations to prevent electrocution.

“We urge the Minister for Energy to direct the immediate disconnection of electricity supply in flooded areas where there is a high risk of electrocution. Human lives must be protected at all costs,” the statement stressed.

The CPP further called on the security services, disaster management agencies and technical experts to work together to mitigate the impact of the flooding, while urging Ghanaians to avoid flood-prone areas and remain vigilant.

The party advised residents stranded by the floods to contact emergency services, including the Police (191), Fire Service (192), Ambulance Service (193) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) emergency lines for immediate assistance.

Concluding the statement, the CPP expressed solidarity with victims of the disaster and pledged its continued support during the crisis.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with every Ghanaian affected by this unfortunate disaster. The CPP will continue to provide support, assistance and stand with the people during these difficult times,” Mr. Acquah added.
