Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has issued a directive for the removal of all mining equipment from forest reserves within the next two weeks.
This announcement was made during his first media address since taking office, held at the Regional Coordinating Council on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need to protect the region’s natural resources, particularly along rivers, which have been prohibited for mining activities for the next 14 days.
This move is part of a broader effort to combat illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” which has been a persistent issue in the region.
The minister’s directive is expected to have a significant impact on the region’s environmental conservation efforts.
Dr Amoakohene during the media engagement emphasized that, the removal of mining equipment from forest reserves will help to prevent further degradation of the environment and protect the region’s biodiversity.
Dr. Amoakohene’s commitment to addressing the issue of galamsey is a welcome development, and his collaboration with other regional ministers to combat this menace is a step in the right direction.
As the Ashanti Region continues to grapple with the challenges posed by galamsey, Dr. Amoakohene’s leadership and commitment to environmental conservation are crucial in addressing this issue.
The removal of mining equipment from forest reserves is a significant step towards protecting the region’s natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
