NPP withdraws from Tamale Central by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, scheduled to fill the vacant seat left by the late Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
Dr. Mohammed was among the eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
This decision was made during a National Steering Committee meeting held on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the Party Headquarters, in accordance with Article 10(10)(1) of the Party’s Constitution.
The Party in a press release on Monday August 11, 2025 said considered various factors, including the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and the potential for further polarization at this critical time.
The release sighed by the party’s General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, and copied to OTEC News Desk noted NPP believes that holding a by-election at this moment would be inhumane and unconscionable, given the sensitive nature of the situation.
The Party is of the view that the tensions and animosity often associated with by-elections should be avoided.
In honor of the departed MP, the NPP believes that the greatest tribute would be to continue the fight against galamsey and ensure a smooth and peaceful transition for the people of Tamale Central.
Consequently, when the Electoral Commission of Ghana opens nominations for the by-election, as per Article 112 (5) of Ghana’s Constitution, the NPP will not participate in the contest, prioritizing the national interest.
This decision reflects the Party’s commitment to unity and stability, particularly during challenging times. By stepping aside, the NPP aims to contribute to a peaceful and stable political environment in the Tamale Central Constituency.
