A security taskforce of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has impounded 30 Trotro commercial vehicles for charging unapproved fares at night.
This comes following growing concern from the public over the decision by drivers to unilaterally increase transport fares during peak commute hours.
The drivers were arrested at Santasi on Sunday for charging passengers high transport fares.
According to passengers, the fare from Santasi to Ahenema Kokobeng is three cedis, but the drivers allegedly charge 10 cedis, inconveniencing passengers on the stretch.
Leader of the taskforce, Sergeant Sampson Dadzie, said all drivers arrested will be put before court for prosecution.
“We will sanitize the system until the drivers do the right thing,” he emphasized.
“This is a strong warning to all drivers: any individual found charging unapproved fees will be arrested to face the law.”
Some passengers interviewed by OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng lauded the security taskforce for their intervention.
They expressed relief that action was being taken, with some respondents saying they often get stranded in the hands of these commercial drivers at night.
