NPP condemns “vicious attacks” on Kufuor, urges NDC to distance itself

The opposition New Patriotic Party has condemned what it describes as sustained attacks by political commentator Kevin Ekow Taylor against former President John Agyekum Kufuor, calling on the governing National Democratic Congress to publicly dissociate itself from the remarks.

In a statement issued on Friday, 8 May, the NPP described the commentary as “vicious” and criticised the NDC for what it called silence in the face of insults directed at a former head of state.

“This is not politics. This is desecration,” the party said.

The NPP praised Kufuor for his tenure, crediting him with stabilising Ghana’s economy, strengthening democratic institutions, and earning international recognition.

“He is not a partisan target; he is a father of this nation,” the statement added.

The party further alleged that the NDC’s failure to respond amounts to tacit endorsement, claiming the commentator has known links to the governing party.

“When a known operative verbally assaults a former President and the leadership of the NDC watches in silence, their silence becomes an endorsement,” it said.

The NPP is demanding that President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC leadership publicly condemn the remarks and distance themselves from Taylor.

It also called on the commentator to issue what it described as a “full, unqualified and public apology” to Kufuor.

The party warned that political discourse must respect certain boundaries, especially when it concerns former national leaders.

“The NDC must decide whether it will stand with our shared cultural values or with the savagery of Kevin Taylor,” the statement said.
