Govt committed to proritising police welfare – Hon Muntaka

Interior Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare needs of police officers to enable them to effectively deliver on their mandate of protecting lives and property.

Speaking at a ceremony to commission a 50-bed police hospital in Kumasi on Thursday, June 5, the Minister commended the leadership of the Ghana Police Service for using its welfare scheme to construct the facility.

“I pledge my full support and that of the government to ensure that this hospital is sound, equipped and maintained to the highest standards.

He added: “The government sees your efforts, we value you, and we’re committed to ensuring that initiatives like this are celebrated, supported and scaled up. We will scale up the police welfare fund into a provident fund that will see you going on retirement smiling.”

He also directed the recruitment of health workers for the Kumasi and Tamale Police Hospitals to ensure the facilities serve their intended purposes.

“I have directed the recruitment of medical staff for both the Tamale and Kumasi police hospitals. This is to ensure that this police station operates at its full capacity,” he assured.

He urged personnel of the Ghana Police Service to remain committed to maintaining peace and order across the country.

Construction of the police hospital in Kumasi, which began in 2015, suffered delays due to a few challenges.

The ultramodern facility, located at the Police Training School at Patasi, comprises essential medical units and departments, including a children’s block.

The Director-General of Welfare at the Ghana Police Service, COP Iddi Lansa Seidu, disclosed that the 100-bed capacity Tamale Police Hospital will soon become operational.
